QUEENSBURY- Robert J. Murray, Jr., of Queensbury, formerly of Hudson Falls, went to the arms of the Lord, following a brief illness on Sunday, August 5, 2018.
Born on March 25, 1945, in Glens Falls, NY, Bob was the son of the late Robert J. Murray, Sr. and Elaine (Maynard) Murray, and the proud grandson of the late James “Pip” and Winnie “Mim” Maynard.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen Corcoran Murray, whom he married on October 21, 1967. They shared 50 wonderful years of marriage.
He is also survived by his daughter, Karen Murray Martin, her husband, Josh and 4 beautiful grandchildren: Connor, Neve, Quinn and Finola, all of Edmond, OK. He was the best father, “Pipa”, and will be greatly missed.
In addition, his loss will be deeply felt by his siblings and their families: sister Penny Wise of Erie, PA. and her 3 children, Ryan (Kristen) Wise of South Glens Falls, Samantha (Mike) Baker of South Glens Falls, and Christopher Wise of NYC; sister, Lisa (Bill) Goldsmith of Dyer, IN and their 3 children, Michael (Beatrice) Goldsmith of Machesney Park, IL, Morgan Goldsmith of Chicago, IL and Nicholas Goldsmith of Dyer, IN. Other surviving loved ones include his special cousin, John (Mary) Murray of Hudson Falls; sister-in-law, Kathleen Corcoran of Rochester, NY; brother-in-law, Patrick (Sharon) Corcoran of Glen Burnie, MD; sisters-in-law, Colleen Corcoran of South Glens Falls and Ann (Melissa) Corcoran of Glens Falls; nephew, Jimmy (Kathy) Oliver of VA; Scott (Lori) Oliver of Glens Falls and LeeAnn (Dale) Stone of South Glens Falls and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Kellie Ann in January of 1978; his sister, Jaqueline (Murray) Oliver; grandparents Joseph and Gertrude Murray; and brothers-in-law, Greg Wise and William Corcoran, Jr.
Bob graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1964. Although a childhood encounter with polio left Bob with physical disabilities, he participated in many sports teams at Hudson Falls High as team manager and especially enjoyed his time with the track and field team, coached by his mentor, Tony Luciano. The hard work, generosity of spirit, and cheerful enthusiasm Bob showed both on and off the field led to his reception of the Hudson Falls High 1964 Sportsmanship Award. Following high school, he extended his studies through coursework at Adirondack Community College, the Electronic Computer Programming Institute, and AIB.
From 1965-1970, he worked for Sandy Hill. Experience with computer operations provided him the opportunity to join the team at the First National Bank of Glens Falls beginning in 1970. Promoted to Operations Officer Supervisor in 1973, Bob stayed with the bank until his retirement in 1995. From 1996-1999, he worked in the data processing department at Glens Falls National Bank. Throughout his adult life, Bob was a strong advocate of public education. He participated in the PTA at Burgoyne Ave School from 1974 until 1980, at which time he won election to the Hudson Falls Board of Education; he went on to serve on the Board until 1992. He was also appointed to the Board of Community Workshop Inc. (CWI) and served for many years.
Everyone who met Bob soon learned that he adored his family above all…. and many could tell you as well of his second great love: golf. He picked up the sport at the tender age of 12 and remained an avid golfer until he retired his clubs in 2008. Over the course of his full, rich life, he also enjoyed bowling, camping with his family, fishing, canoeing, hunting with his buddies, many a morning breakfast with his friends and playing cards. Bob was a devoted husband, a beloved father and grandfather; and a genuine friend to many. His smile truly lit up the room and he shared it gladly through to the end of his life.
Friends may call on Friday, August 10, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY.
A Funeral Mass will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church on the park Hudson Falls, with the Reverend Thomas Babiuch, Pastor, officiating.
The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery, in the town of Kingsbury.
