HUDSON FALLS – Richard Thomas Monahan, 88, the Mayor of Clark Street, went to join his heavenly family, on Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Born on Oct. 28, 1924 in Jenkinsville, he was the son of the late Jerry and Lena (Beecher) Monahan.

On June 3, 1945, Richard married Marie Ann Norton at St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls. They have enjoyed 68 wonderful years of marriage.

Richard was an employee of Monahan & Loughlin, Inc. from 1945 to 1974 when he became owner and operator of that company. After his retirement, he continued on at Monahan & Loughlin, Inc. as Chairman of the Board.   Richard also owned Mim Realty in Indian Lake and Moon Realty in Hudson Falls. Richard was a longtime member of the Capital District Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association.  He loved his company.  His work and his family was his life

Richard was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls, where he also was on the Finance Committee and an usher. He was a member of the Monsignor Arthur S. Kiffin, Knights of Columbus Council # 296 in Hudson Falls and the Glens Falls Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge # 81.

In his younger years he and his friends Freddie, Jay, Mel and Tom enjoyed going to the Saratoga Race Track to watch the harness horses that he and his friends owned.   Richard loved to party and entertain his family and friends.  He was famous for his drive by checks of the community, always with Marie by his side. He loved watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren growing up.  Richard loved them all.  For many years, Richard enjoyed spending time with his family at his second home in Indian Lake.  He had a quick wit and a great memory for names and people. 

 Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, James Monahan, Robert Monahan, Clark Monahan, John Monahan, Clarence Monahan, Leo Monahan, Edward Monahan, William Monahan, Gerald Monahan and Carleton Monahan; his sisters, Elizabeth Monahan Keech, Mary Monahan Finger, Katherine Monahan, Helena Monahan Ryder  and Florence Monahan.

 Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Marie Monahan of Hudson Falls; his children, Michael L. Monahan and his wife, Donna of Naples, Florida, Patrick J. Monahan and his wife, Joan, of Moreau, Kathleen Hallenbeck and her husband, Kurt, of Hudson Falls and Karen Monahan McLaughlin of Hudson Falls, Joanne Davidson and her husband, Jeffrey of Hudson Falls; his sister, Teresa Marcantonio of Hudson Falls; his thirteen grandchildren, Brian Monahan and his wife, Bridget, David Monahan and his wife, Marika, Michelle Santor and her husband, Jason, Stephen Monahan and his wife, Megan, Sean Monahan, Christine Monahan, Marc Monahan and his wife, Desiree,  Joshua Hallenbeck, Mickey McLaughlin, Heather Battiste and her husband, Joseph, Erin McLaughlin, Chelsea Lemon and her husband, William and Melissa Davidson; 26 great grandchildren;  and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard also had special feelings for Stacey Hallenbeck, Mariko McLaughlin and Megan Monahan.

 Friends may call on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

 A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church, on the park, in Hudson Falls.

 Bearers will be Brian Monahan, David Monahan, Stephen Monahan, Sean Monahan, Marc Monahan, Mickey McLaughlin, Joshua Hallenbeck, Mike Fiorillo and Joe Battiste.  Honorary Bearers will be his granddaughters, Michelle Santor, Christine Monahan, Heather Battiste, Erin McLaughlin, Chelsea Lemon and Melissa Davidson.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the Town of Fort Edward.

 The family wishes to thank Dr. Gaiotti-Grubbs and her staff and Washington County Hospice for the wonderful care and kindness given to Richard and his family. They will be forever grateful.
