Leo J. Altizio, Sr.

Hudson Falls – Leo J. Altizio, Sr., 87, of Hudson Falls, went into the arms of the Lord, on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Leo was born on July 18, 1931 in Fort Edward, at the family’s humble homestead on Canal Street, son of the late Matteo Altizio and Filomena LoBasso Altizio, the youngest of five brothers.  Leo was proud of his Italian heritage, being the son of Italian immigrants who came to the United States, met, married, obtained citizenship and raised their family in their small home in the village of Fort Edward.  Leo cherished the time he had with his parents and brothers and was proud of his hometown.

Leo was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Salem at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland from 1950 to 1952.

Leo swiftly found employment as a Life Test Operator at General Electric, starting in March of 1952, first at the Fort Edward plant and then moving to the Hudson Falls site.  Leo retired from G.E. after 39 years of service on October 1, 1991.  Leo enjoyed great friendships at G.E., many of which have continued to this day.   Following his retirement, Leo enjoyed working on woodworking projects and home improvement projects around the house.  Leo always wanted to keep busy, repeating the adage “the more you do, the more you want to do”.

Leo’s tenacity for life and love paid off when he met and married the love of his life, Elaine Cosgrove, on July 1, 1967.  Leo and Elaine celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 1, 2017, witnessed by many friends and family, and was just months short of celebrating 52 years.  Leo was the quintessential patriarch of the family, his utmost priority in life was family and faith.  Leo began his faith at St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward and later a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls, serving many years on the Ushers Committee.  Leo was also a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his parents, Leo was predeceased by his brothers, Johnny Altizio, Marty Altizio, Nunzie Altizio and Tommy Altizio, as well as many other dear close relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Altizio, son, Leo Altizio, Jr., daughter, Alicia Altizio and her fiancé, Patrick Collins, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.  Leo cherished the companionship of his four-legged feline best friend, Pumpkin.

Friends may call on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, from 4 to 7pm, at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11am on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church on the Park in Hudson Falls.
