LAKE GEORGE- Joseph “Joe” Thomas Cormie, Sr., 86, of Ledgeview Drive, passed away surrounded by his loved ones, on Monday, May 7, 2018, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born on February 27, 1932, in Hudson Falls, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Evelyn (Benware) Cormie.
Upon his graduation from Hudson Falls High School, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War before being honorably discharged.
He married Fay Isabelle Stewart in 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hudson Falls. They were married for 32 years before she passed away in 1985. Together they raised five children, Larry, Joseph, Matt, Scott and Karen.
Joe was fortunate enough to meet and marry his second wife, Joyce (Rose) Fairbanks on October 12, 1988 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Fort Ann.
Many people may have known Joe as an employee at Sandy Hill and later, as an independent driver for Freihofer’s. After his retirement, he drove the veteran’s van for Warren County.
The center of his life revolved around his family and together they enjoyed many camping trips and gatherings. Joe was always supportive of his children’s interests and activities, coaching them at Little League and making spaghetti sauce and meatballs to share.
He loved to discuss history, watch the N.Y. Mets play baseball and the N.Y. Knicks play basketball. Joe had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a very witty and entertaining man, who always left a smile on everyone’s face.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Cormie of Lake George, for whom he was a wonderful husband; his loving children, Larry Cormie and his wife, Jane of Florida, Joseph Cormie, Jr. of Fort Ann, Scott Cormie of South Glens Falls, Matthew Cormie of Clifton Park, Karen Cormie and her longtime partner, William Quinn of Queensbury, Kathleen Hilpertshauser and her husband, Glenn of Hudson Falls, Stephen Fairbanks and his wife, Sharon of Hudson Falls, Jack Fairbanks and his wife, Sheri of Florida, Beth Mabie and her husband, E. David “Jake” of Chestertown and Amy Harrington and her husband, Jeff of Gansevoort; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, for whom he was a warm and loving grandfather; his siblings, Mary Ann Haydel and her husband, Joe of Moreau and Peter J. Cormie and his wife, Susan of Argyle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be private.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made in Joe’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
The family would like to give special thanks to the 4W Nurses at Glens Falls Hospital for the wonderful care and compassion given to Joe and to his family.
