Dorothy V. Hughes

HUDSON FALLS – Dorothy V. Hughes, 99, formerly of Liberty Place, left this world on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Born on November 29, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, she was the daughter of William E. and Florence (Enright) VanTassel.

Mrs. Hughes was the secretary to Alaxander Miller, former superintendent of schools for the Glens Falls City School District. She then became the Chief Clerk of the New York State Court System, serving Washington County until her retirement in 1991.

She was a member of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for 17 years. She was also a member of the Hudson Falls branch of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild. Mrs. Hughes was a former member of the Literacy Volunteers in Glens Falls. Her favorite charity work was serving meals at the Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene Soup Kitchen in Hudson Falls.

Mrs. Hughes’ favorite enjoyments were tending to her flower garden and her family and the closeness they shared.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her son, Paul A. Hughes and her brother, William F. VanTassell.

Survivors include her three sons, David D. Hughes of Hudson Falls, Robert E. Hughes of Fort Ann, Mark W. Hughes of Fort Ann; her sister, Irene Homer of Queensbury; ten grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Pine View Cemetery in the spring.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the United Methodist Church, 227 Main St., Hudson Falls, NY 12839.

Margaret Hughes

Fenimore – Margaret Hughes, 95, of Fenimore, passed away at Fort Hudson Nursing Home on Monday, December 25, 2017.

Born June 30, 1922, in the town of Moreau, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Sarah (Smith) Suprise.

Margaret attended grade school in Fenimore and then graduated from Hudson Falls High School. She then attended Nursing School in Albany for several years.

In 1941, she married Arthur H. Hughes in Granville, NY.  He died in 1964.

She was employed at Sheridan Catheter, formerly in Argyle.

Margaret was a member of the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church.  She lovingly took care of her parents until their deaths.  She loved taking trips with the South Glens Falls Senior Center enjoying travel until her health prevented it.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Leonard Suprise and George Suprise.

Survivors include two children, Margaret Button and her husband, Douglas of West Danville, VT and Arthur Hughes and his wife, Shiela of Martha’s Vineyard, MA; her five grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one brother, Corydon Suprise and his wife, Priscilla of South Glens Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, 5 Maplewood Pkwy in South Glens Falls.

Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Church.

Burial will be in the spring at Mettowee Cemetery in the town of Granville.
