FORT EDWARD – Phyllis (Johnson) Goodro, 93, of Griffin Avenue, went into the arms of her husband, on Thursday, May 16, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on October 7, 1925 in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of the late Harold E. and Eva Myrtle (Tyre) Johnson. Phyllis was born and lived her whole life in Fort Edward. She graduated from Fort Edward High School in 1944, where she was proud to have been a majorette and finally, took her last breath in Fort Edward. By all accounts, she was a Fort Edward girl.
On August 5, 1945, she married Gardner C. Goodro, Jr. in the Fort Edward United Methodist Church. Gardner passed away in January of 2001, after 65 years of marriage.
Phyllis was a member of the Fortsville United Methodist Church and at one time was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star as a past Grand Representative of Indiana, a past Junior Deputy of Fides Triangle and a past Matron of Fort Edward Ashler Chapter 147. She was proud to have been a member for over seventy-five years. Phyllis also belonged to the Wedgewood Couples Golf League and enjoyed playing bridge with the “girls” in the Hill Top Bridge Club.
As a young girl, Phyllis loved to roller skate and dance. She was so into dancing that at one time, Phyllis wore a hole into her parent’s living room rug. As she grew older, Phyllis enjoyed listening to books, traveling with her husband to Marine Corp. reunions. She always felt blessed to have visited New Zealand, Australia and Europe. Closer to home, she loved going to the ocean at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire. While on her trips, Phyllis always brought back a magnet from each state and country to place on her refrigerator.
In addition to her husband, Gardner C. Goodro, she was predeceased by her sister, Shirley Messier, her brother in law, Stanley Messier and her nephew, Michael Turner.
Survivors include her daughter, Jan Coons of Fort Edward; her grandson, Timothy Coons of Fort Edward; a great granddaughter, Fiona Dolton-Coons of Glens Falls; a niece, Penny Haxston of Moreau; two grand nieces, Anne Fitzgerald and her husband, Walter of Argyle and Susan Ivanico of Moreau; one grandnephew, Edward Turner of Moreau; and several cousins.
Memorial calling hours will be on Wednesday from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls.
Memorial services will follow the calling hours at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Dufford, pastor of the Fortsville United Methodist Church in Wilton, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.
Her family suggests that memorials in Phyllis name be made to the Fortsville United Methodist Church, Fortsville Rd., Gansevoort, NY 12831.
