HUDSON FALLS – Karen A. Northrup, 71, of Dean Road, passed away peacefully in the arms of the Lord in the early hours of Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.

Born January 5, 1945 in Wales, UK, Karen was the daughter of the late Walter Howard – US Army Air Corps and Olga (Sayes) Howard – British Army Nursing Service.  The new family came to the US when there service was over.

Karen grew up in Hudson Falls with her parents and younger twin siblings, graduated from Hudson Falls High School, and continued her education at Adirondack Community College, where she received her degree in Languages.  After being introduced by her lifelong friend Connie Dodge, she married her soulmate in 1966, settled into raising two boys then rejoined the workforce in the 1980s when her children where in high school.  She used her talent and love of language, proofreading and editing, for budding authors, and at Tribune Media Services for over thirty years, retiring on her 70th birthday.

Karen was an active member of the Hudson Falls First Presbyterian Church. She served as an Elder, Deacon and was a mainstay of the choir for decades.

Karen had a beautiful voice and would sing or recite poetry whenever the mood took her.  She enjoyed the theater, especially musicals, loved leisurely rides with her husband, and valued spending time with her family and friends.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of 51 years, Gary Northrup of Hudson Falls; her two sons, Greg Northrup and partner Michele Jordan of Greenwich, and Drew Northrup and wife, Paula of Moreau; her granddaughters, Dylan Jakacki of Cambridge and Paige Posada of Moreau; her brother, Brooke Howard and wife, Denise of Hudson Falls; her sister, Lynn Howard of Fair Haven, VT; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Plank, pastor of the Hudson Falls First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Hudson Falls First Presbyterian Church, 5 River Street, Hudson Falls, NY  12839.

    My heart goes out to Gary and sons. Karen was such a loving, giving soul, always thinking of others despite any challenges in her own life. During joys and concerns, she always shared those of people she knew or did not know personally, and sometimes not even their name. Rest in peace my dear friend, you will dearly missed…….

    I wished we stayed in touch as adults. Sounds like Karen had a wonderful life. I remember her as a very good person. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.
