Agnes “Marie” Northrup

HUDSON FALLS – Agnes “Marie” Northrup, 92, a longtime Hudson Falls resident, passed away peacefully at home, on Thursday, November 1, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

Marie was born on December 25, 1925, in the town of Fort Edward and was the daughter of the late Peter and Catherine (Holmes) Morency.  She grew up on lower Allen Street during the Great Depression and attended St. Mary’s Academy in Hudson Falls along with her siblings.

After graduating High School, she married William Devitt, a veteran of World War II, on May 19, 1946, and settled on North Street in Hudson Falls where she raised her three children.  After William passed away on June 9, 1961, Marie continued to work at General Electric in Hudson Falls while working to raise three children on her own.

In 1966, she met Charles Northrup, a talented musician and chef who operated the Lantern Lodge restaurant in Saratoga Springs for many years.  After dating for a short period, the couple married on October 10, 1966, and were together for nearly thirty-two years before Charles passed away on October 3, 1998.

After the death of her husband Charles, Marie continued to focus on her family and provided advice and counsel to her children and grand-children during times of need.  She was devout Catholic and was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls for many years.  Her faith in the Lord was strong and she was grateful for her long life and family.

Besides her parents and her husbands, she was predeceased by her twin sister, Catherine Morency, her brother, William Morency, and her sister, Helen Cain.

Survivors include her children, William Devitt and his wife, Sandra of Fort Edward, Christine “Sue” Gaulin and her husband, Mark of Hudson Falls and Marie Jackson-Harris and her husband, Ken of Moreau; her grandchildren, Christopher Haessly and his wife, Michelle Borbas, Scott Haessly, Shay Foxenburg and her husband, Rob, Deann Devitt, Reed Devitt, Daniel Harris and Kasey Harris; her great grandson, Jonathan Sarno; her sister, Margaret Berrigan.

At Marie’s request, all services will be private.

Donations in Marie’s name may be made to Community Hospice, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs

    Bill, Sue, and Marie, I am so sorry for your loss. I knew your Mom as the most wonderful friend to my sister Patti (Bowyer). I have many fond memories of sitting in Pattis TV room and sharing all kinds of stories with lots of laughing and talking. Your Mom was a great listener, and a real sweetheart, may she rest in the peace she deserves. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. God bless.
