FORT ANN – Walter H. Stevenson, 81, a longtime resident of Fort Ann, passed away peacefully in his home, on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, with his loving family by his side.
Born December 28, 1932, in Jenkinsville, he was the son of the late Harold W. and Ella L.(Chase) Stevenson.
He served his country proudly when he was drafted in the Army Infantry from December 4, 1954 to September 27, 1955. Walter was very proud to be among a select few who marched in the Liberation Parade, in Holland, in 1955.
Walter lived a very full and successful life enjoying his many passions; from Ice Racing, Enduros to his latest enjoyment of a 1931 Model A Ford. In the late 50’s, he was a member of the “Northway Riders Motorcycle Club” who hosted the scrambling racing in Argyle. In the mid 60’s, he also enjoyed racing on the ice as well as later years riding his 4-wheeler. He enjoyed bowling for 34 years with “Bay Ridge Volunteer Fire Company” with family and friends. He was a long time member of “Bear Pen Hunting Club” in Stony Creek, where he enjoyed hunting and sharing many stories and jokes with friends and family for hours, as he was a leader of the “Family’s Gift to Gab”. He got the name of “Advisor” as he would share advice to everyone whether they wanted it or not!
He worked for 40 plus years for Scott McLaughlin’s Excavation and then later years opened his own excavating business, Stevenson Excavating, which is well known today by many people in the local and surrounding communities.
Besides his parents, Walter was predeceased by his brothers, Charles E. and Eugene R. Stevenson.
Survivors include his wife of 58 wonderful years, Connie (Cutter) Stevenson of Fort Ann; his brothers, Byron and his wife Toni, Raymond and his wife, Carol; his sister, Louise Bean and her husband, Raymond; his sons, Jon and his wife, Colleen, Bruce and his wife, Christine; his daughter Teresa Akins and her husband, Edward. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, Edward Akins Jr. (Laura Kane), Katie Akins (Todd Hoag), Brandon Stevenson (Taylor Dufrain) and Jenna Stevenson; his step grandchildren, George, Callie and Adam Knapp, Jesse and Jerad Ross; his great granddaughter, Elizabeth Akins; his great step grandchildren, Kiera, Kyleigh, Brayden, Carsen, Ella, and Addalynn. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at the Harrisena Community Church, 1616 Ridge Road, in the town of Queensbury, with the Reverend Leah Goodwin, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow at Seeley Cemetery in the town of Queensbury.
