James B. Shannon, Jr.

ShannonQUEENSBURY – James B. Shannon, Jr, 66, a retired teacher, passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the Glens Falls Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on July 6, 1950, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late James J. and Florence (Smith) Shannon.

James was very proud to serve his country as a United States Marine in Vietnam.  In his younger years, he obtained his CDL license and delivered oil in Brooklyn as well as the Peekskill area. He then became a New York State Corrections Officer, serving at Green Haven and Great Meadow Correctional facilities.  He went on to become a school teacher, teaching Forestry and Conservation at BOCES in Kingsbury until his retirement.

James was an accomplished diver. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling, whitewater rafting, and softball. He was active with the Vietnam Veterans, the Marine Corps League, American Legion and Elks Lodge. Jim was an active member of the community participating in volunteer work, fundraisers and benefits.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a sister Maureen Shannon, a brother Gerard Shannon and a great nephew Danny Wines.

Survivors include his son Brendan Shannon of Queensbury, three sisters, Margaret (“Peggy” Shannon) and Bruce Beckwith, Ann (“Kathy” Shannon) Clogston, and Joni(Shannon) and Larry Henderson all from Orange City Florida, as well as beloved nieces and nephews, including Patti Doud, Bobby Wines, Tina Wines, Melissa Nycz, Nichole Segal, Eric Wines, Samantha Zaleski, Lyza Johnston, and James “Jay” Clogston.

He is also survived by his special friends from Florida, including Jamie Clogston, and his “Northern Friends”, the Depalo’s, the Caseys, the Sullivan’s and the Armstrong’s and several other families he touched with his heart.

A memorial service in his memory will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Gospel Lighthouse Assemblies of God Church on Lacrosse St. in Hudson Falls.

Interment, with military honors, will take place on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 1 p.m.at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Duell Rd in the town of Stillwater.
