QUEENSBURY – Dr. Barbara Elizabeth Chick, 86 of Queensbury, NY died on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, after a short illness.
Dr. Chick was born April 25, 1929 in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late Justin Ivan and Inez Elizabeth Chick.
She attended grade school and high school in Cornish, Maine, then attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. Dr. Chick subsequently earned her Master’s degree in Science at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and her Doctorate in Medicine at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1959. Her medical practice after internship in Portland, Oregon and residency in Buffalo, NY was limited to Radiology with sub-specializations in Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine at the Glens Falls Hospital. Dr Chick also served with Project HOPE as staff radiologist aboard the “Hope Ship” in Nicaragua, Central America in 1966. She was board certified by the American college of Radiology in 1964 and the American College of nuclear medicine in 1972. She achieved Fellowship in the American College of Radiology in 1979.
Dr. Chick retired from full-time practice at Glens Falls in 1984 to assume the acting directorship of The Albany Area Radiation Therapy Program in Albany, NY.
For the remainder of her active professional life, Dr. Chick provided coverage in Radiation Therapy for Riverview Cancer Care Center in Rexford, NY, Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY and Glens Falls Hospital, Glens Falls, NY.
During her professional career, she was active in the Warren County Medical Society, serving as Secretary and President, The American Cancer Society, also serving as President, The Northeastern NY Radiological Society and The New York Chapter of The American College of Radiology having served as President for one or more years in each. Dr. Chick was also active at the national level of The American College of Radiology, where she served as Councilor for the New York Chapter, and was appointed as a Chancellor of the Board of the American College of Radiology. After chairing the Commission of Radiologic Practice for six years, she was elected to the office of Vice-President of the College, the first woman to be elected to that office.
In addition to her medical pursuits, Dr. Chick was an active member of the local boating community, including both the US Power Squadron and The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, in which she served at Flotilla, Division and District level. She participated in three OPERATION SAIL celebrations in 1976, 1986, & 1992 respectively. Subsequently Dr. Chick worked as the Boat Crew Qualification Coordinator for the Northern Area of the First Coast Guard District (SR) of New York, this area extending from Burlington, VT to Governors Island, NY.
She also served on the boards of several local non-profit organizations, including Greater Adirondack Home Aides and The Lake George Association, of which she was elected president from 1992 through 1995. Dr. Chick was also a Certified Basketball Official through the Women’s Athletic Association.
Her interest in her colleges has led to the dedication of a Biology Lab at Bates College and the endowment of The Barbara E. Chick, M.D., Clinical Educational and Assessment Center of the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University of School of Medicine at Drexel University.

A memorial service is to be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls with the Rev. Bruce Hersey, officiating.
Interment is to be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland Maine.
