Roy George Jakway, Sr.

HUDSON FALLS – Roy George Jakway, Sr., 78, of Jakway Road, died on December 30, 2014, after an extended illness, at Washington Center in Argyle

Born September 27, 1936, in Fort Ann on the Mattison Homestead, he was the son of the late George and Nellie (Mattison) Jakway.

Roy attended a one room school house on county Route 41 at the age of 4 and at the age of 16, graduated in 1953 from the Hudson Falls school system.  After graduation, he was a partner on the Jakway Farm with his father, and was the sole operator for a number of years. He then partnered with his son Roy Jr., until his retirement in 1987.

He attended school in Albany at the NABA School for the Blind for 6 months.  He then enrolled at SUNY Adirondack and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts in 1992.

Roy enjoyed several hobbies around his home, including tending to numerous bird feeders and birdhouses on his property, walking and listening to books on tape.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, whom he loved to rock and hold.

He is survived by his loving wife Vivian of 58 Years and his 7 children, their spouses, 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.  They are, Pamela Donohue and her husband, Bill of Danville VA, their children, Erin and her husband, Chris, Sara and Neal, and great granddaughter, Nora;  Michelle Powers of Queensbury and daughters, Allison and her husband, Carl and Amy and great grandchildren, Sophia, Carter and Madelyn; Roy Jr. and his wife, Shirley of Hudson Falls and children, Nathan and Abbie; Susan Kill and her husband, Brian of Hudson Falls and daughters, Elizabeth and Mary; Jennifer Smith and her husband, Sean of Queensbury and daughters, Anna, Emily, Lillian; Jason Jakway and his wife, Katie of Chittenango; and Desirea Jakway of Hudson Falls.  He is also survived by his sisters, Norma Clark of Hudson Falls, Carol Greene of Fort Ann, Jackie Harrington and her husband, Wayne of South Glens Falls, Jean Rhodes and her husband, Phil also of Queensbury; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Vivian Jakway and the family from 10 to 11 a.m., on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the United Methodist Church, 227 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.

A memorial service will immediately follow at 11 a.m., at the church with the Rev. Steve Andrews, officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring at a date to be announced. ‘

Roy’s family would like to thank the nurse’s and staff at Washington Center for all their care given to Roy and his family.
