HUDSON FALLS – Amos Wheeler, 94, of Hudson Falls, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 19, 2017 at The Pines in Glens Falls after a long illness.
Amos was born July 9, 1922, to the late John and Mary Wheeler. He was one of eight siblings, and after the untimely passing of his father at a very young age, he and his brother Fred were placed in foster care with Hollister and Bessie Smith in Adamsville.
Amos married the love of his life, Lois Ruth Howard on October, 23 1944. They were inseparable for 70 years until her passing on January 27, 2015.
Amos worked for the Glens Falls Portland Cement Company. He was a crane and heavy equipment operator for over 30 years until his retirement in 1981.
Amos loved spending time with his family, doing word search puzzles, taking rides to Vermont, eating at Ponderosa in Rutland, and listening to classic country and Polkas on Sunday morning. He especially looked forward to playing dice every night with his daughter Betty. She’s fondly known to all by the nickname ‘Skip,’ and to Randy by the nickname ‘Cheater’ (but she always cheated to lose, not to win). Betty was Amos’ sole caregiver for the last several years. The entire family owes her a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.
Besides his wife, Lois, Amos was predeceased by all of his siblings and his first-born daughter Jeanne Marie Morris, who passed away on December 30, 2015.
Amos is survived by his remaining children, Betty (Tim) Beal of Hudson Falls, Sandra (Daniel) Potter of Las Vegas Nevada, Kathy (Tom) Lyons of South Carolina, Gary Wheeler of Glens Falls, Howard Wheeler of Fort Ann, Lori Eggleston and her companion, Clark Condon of Moreau, Randy (Barbara) Wheeler of Hartford, and Jeffery (April) Wheeler of Argyle; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Beatrice Howard of The Pines in Glens Falls.
Friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc. located at 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.
A funeral service will immediately follow calling hours at 4 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Reverend Patricia Girard officiating.
A burial will take place in the spring at Brown Cemetery in Fort Ann.
Donations in Amos’ name may be made out to a charity of one’s own choice.
